The third and penultimate game in this year’s series commenced this Saturday afternoon, 15th June 2019, at
Victoria Bowls Club against Herefordshire. Following the results of the first two games the selectors
made the difficult decision to make some minor tweaks to the team. As a result, it’s a pleasure
to welcome a new Middleton Cup player into the team, and Saturday saw the introduction of
Fraser Ham from Clevedon BC, who made a very impressive debut.
The Victoria Green was as always in great condition which was somewhat amazing
considering the poor weather conditions during the week leading up to the game. My
thanks as always to all those supporters, reserves and officials who attended and supported
our team.
On their arrival it was obvious that Hereford have lost a number of players from the team we
drew against last year, but as explained to the players pre game I’m sure they had not come
to Weston to lose.
As with last week’s game the early exchanges went well, and after 5 ends across the board Somerset
found themselves a couple of shots up, with all rinks going well. By ten ends the Blackbirds
started to fly and opened up a 30 shot lead with only last week’s top rink of Neil Saunders
behind. This trend continued for the rest of the game and although Neil came back to lose by
just 4 shots all other rinks powered on to give Somerset a massive 76 shot win and 20 of the 22
points on offer.
We now sit third in our group with our last game of this year’s campaign at Broadway next
week, where we hope we can continue and grow the level of performance.
Please come and support our Team.
