Once again Somerset played away in the preliminaries of the Balcombe Trophy, that’s the 3rd time in the last 4 years. This year we played against a strong Wiltshire team at Wootton Bassett on Sunday morning 9th June 2019. As always the competition for Balcombe Trophy places was high, and a number of players were unfortunate to miss out. My thanks to all those who travelled including our President, the reserves and supporters alike. It was great to see a number of the current Middleton Cup Squad come along to support the team.
The two Rinks selected this year were:-

Simon Barnard, Neil Westlake, Nick Pearce, James Amery.

Eddie Hopegood, Neil Saunders, Craig Walker, Sam Steel.

Res:- Jonny Kingston and Kevin Jones

The game started slowly with neither side taking any real advantage and after 5 ends the game had a couple shots between the teams. James’ Rink playing Wiltshire’s 2018 National 4’s champions and Sam’s playing Neil Collett, with Graham Shadwell at three. A high class game ensued with some very impressive bowling from both teams, on a sometimes tricky surface. Once again I can’t fault our team for the competitive spirit shown throughout the game and going into 15 ends Somerset lead the game by Two shots.  Closing this game out was always going to be difficult with the high standard of our opponents, but on the 20th end of the game, we lost a three on both Rinks and the game slipped away losing by 8 shots overall.
James’ rink finishing 16 – 16, Sam’s losing 16 – 24.
Next week will see us return back to Victoria BC in the Middleton Cup against Herefordshire,
Saturday (2pm) the team will be announced on Tuesday 11th June.
Please come and support our Team.
